{"id":1968,"date":"2021-04-27T20:09:58","date_gmt":"2021-04-27T18:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biopole-clermont.com\/?p=1968"},"modified":"2022-01-17T20:11:48","modified_gmt":"2022-01-17T19:11:48","slug":"actu-02","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biopole-clermont.com\/en\/actu-02\/","title":{"rendered":"Carbios and Michelin on their way to 100% sustainable tires."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Michelin has successfully validated the use of Carbios\u2019 enzymatic recycling technology for PET plastic waste in its tires, a new step towards 100% sustainable tires.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion ui-accordion ui-widget ui-helper-reset\" role=\"tablist\">\n<div id=\"ui-accordion-7-header-0\" class=\"EnSavoirPlusActu ui-accordion-header ui-helper-reset ui-state-default ui-accordion-icons ui-accordion-header-active ui-state-active ui-corner-top\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"ui-accordion-7-panel-0\" aria-selected=\"true\">\n<p class=\"131\">Michelin has successfully tested and applied Carbios\u2019 enzymatic recycling process for PET plastic waste, in order to create a high tenacity tire fibre that meets the tire-giant\u2019s technical requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ui-accordion-7-panel-0\" class=\"FondGris ui-accordion-content ui-helper-reset ui-widget-content ui-corner-bottom ui-accordion-content-active\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"ui-accordion-7-header-0\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n<div class=\"Contenu\">\n<p>Carbios\u2019 enzymatic recycling process uses an enzyme capable of depolymerizing the PET contained in various plastics or textiles (bottles, trays, polyester clothing, etc.). This innovation allows infinite recycling of all types of PET waste. It also allows the production of 100% recycled and 100% recyclable PET products, with the same quality as if they were produced with virgin PET.<\/p>\n<p>The application of PET enzymatic recycling in car tires is a world first.<\/p>\n<p>Conventional thermomechanical recycling processes for complex plastics do not achieve the PET high-performance grade required for pneumatic applications. However, the monomers resulting from Carbios\u2019 process, which used colored and opaque plastic waste such as bottles, once repolymerized in PET, made it possible to obtain a high tenacity fibre meeting Michelin\u2019s tire requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The technical fibre obtained is of the same quality as the one from virgin PET, processed with the same prototype installations. This high tenacity polyester is particularly suitable for tires, due to its breakage resistance, toughness, and thermal stability.<\/p>\n<p>Carbios\u2019 enzymatic recycling process therefore enables Michelin to get one step closer to its sustainable ambitions, and contributes to the entry of tires into a true circular economy. Michelin is committed to achieving 40% sustainable materials (of renewable or recycled origin) by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
